In 2023, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced plans for young people to continue studying mathematics until the age of 18. He argued that the economy will not be able to grow unless work is done to combat “poor numeracy” which would otherwise “cost our economy tens of billions a year or to leave people twice as likely to be unemployed as those with competent numeracy”.
